Baby Face Nelson
Nelson joined the Underdogs Team in June of 2017 at the age of 7 months old. I found Nelson through Saving Great Animals, a foster-based rescue that’s based out of Seattle, WA. With the recent loss of Capone, I was longing for a companion and once I saw his “baby face”, I couldn’t get it out of my head – we had to meet him!
By the time I had found him, Nelson had already been in and out of 6 foster homes and was being referred to as a “biter”. He was exhibiting signs of fear, anxiety and a severe absence of trust in people. Since Nelson had so many different fosters during some of the most critical developmental period of his development, it seemed he had learned to cope by increasing space between he and his stressors by biting with very little warning.
Nelson was unlike any dog that I had ever met and I was determined to build a relationship with him. I wanted him to feel comfortable, confident and happy. I quickly came to the realization that although I had worked with dogs professionally for 5+ years – I was over my head and needed to learn more FAST. So, I began watching podcasts, reading books and doing anything I could to understand this small fry’s behavior. I found that I loved what I was learning and that the changes I was making was making a huge difference in the relationship between Nelson & myself. The more that I learned, the more I wanted to share my knowledge and experience with those around me – which ultimately prompted me to begin my career in Animal Behavior and Dog Training – hence why Nelson’s been coined “The Inspiration“.
Since his adoption, we’ve worked hard to help establish trust between the two of us; as well as, ways for Nelson to communicate that something is too much for him prior to attempts to communicate with his teeth instead! He’s shown exponential growth in his level of confidence and ability to communicate during situations where he’s feeling stressed. My overall goal for Nelson is for him to be happy and feel safe! There are still situations which are too much for him and that’s okay! Overtime, I’ve had to come to the conclusion that Nelson doesn’t want to participate in. We work together as a team to have fun, build our relationship and enjoy every experience together which makes our time together such a blast!
Nelson has many hobbies:
